When it comes to fly reels, the essential factors – weight, retrieve rate, line storage, drag torque, and ergonomics – must all be balanced against one another in order to create a high-performing reel, and they constitute the foundation for the design. Weight and retrieve rate are by far the most essential of them, since the ratio of the two determines what qualifies as a big arbour reel. Simply put, these two factors are referred to as retrieve rate per ounce, and the Holy Grail of fly reel design is an architecture that produces the lightest construction feasible for a given diameter without losing dependability.
